Sept 22, 2020

Hello everyone! Here's what we're up to today:

  • Tasks for today: "check in," take notes on literary terms, post discussion response, answer questions on the song, and write a freewrite
  • Checking in - head on over to the "Checking in" channel and let us know how you're doing today.
  • Literary terms definitions and activity (notes added to the "Lesson Notes" document)
    • Metaphor
    • Simile
    • Symbolism
  • Discussion question (post your answer on the discussion channel)
    • Imagine you graduate high school, and you're given 10 billion dollars. What kind of life would you want to live? Describe it, and explain it.
  • "the last great american dynasty" by Taylor Swift
    • This is a good song, but what matters is that all songs are a form of poetry (even if Taylor Swift isn't your jam). We can search for connotation in anything we hear!
    • Historical context - this song is about Rebekah Harkness
    • Exploring the lyrics
      • Note the contrast between "saltbox house" and "Holiday House"
      • Note the switch in tone after her husband died
      • Note the connection she is making between herself and Rebekah Harkness
    • Questions to consider (these are helpful to prepare for the test in two weeks)
      • What might a thematic statement be that applies to the song? "Sometimes, ____ can _______"
      • What literary terms do you see? Consider imagery, alliteration, assonance, symbolism, metaphor
      • What is your opinion of the song?
  • Assignment 2
    • Consider this document for integrating quotes
    • Examples on the lesson notes document of how to integrate quotes
    • Be sure to complete this by Thursday, end of day (I'll be creating the assignment on Teams after this lesson)
  • Freewrite prompt (remember, you'll need to complete six by Oct. 4)
    • More money, more problems
  • For tomorrow's lesson, from 1215-1245, be sure to read "The Raven Steals the Light" by Bill Reid beforehand.
