Hello! Here's what we're up to today:

Face to Face

  • Silent Reading
  • Checking in - How are you feeling today?
  • Recap of last class.
  • Literary Terms (Lesson Notes)
    • Theme
    • Thematic Statement
    • Protagonist/Antagonist
    • Characterization
    • Irony
    • Tone
  • Freewrite to practice characterization.
  • Discussion: How accurate do you think the story was? How do you feel about companies that are similar to Multivac today (Microsoft, Google, Amazon, etc)?
  • Background on Sci Fi in the 1950s
  • Background on computing - consider Moore's Law
  • Activity on "All the Troubles of the World"
    • Create a "plot structure" graph, listing key details from the story
    • Describe our future, in 70 years. What benefits do we have, and what rights have we lost?
    • Create a thematic statement for the short story.
    • Who are some of the characters in the story? Consider what they say and do (not a lot of physical descriptions in the story). What do those things (indirect characterization) tell us about what kind of people they are?
    • In what way does the story demonstrate irony?
  • Recapping P1. How might you use these two texts for that project?
  • Tomorrow, we'll be watching 1/2 of the Matrix.
