Hello! Sorry I can't be there today. Here are your goals for tomorrow:
- Determine a focus for your essay. See the assignment page for more information on possible focuses.
- Get started on your plan for your essay. Your goal for tomorrow should be to complete everything except the quotes tomorrow (if you do already know some quotes you want to use, feel free to add them too). Here's what it should look like:
- Question:
- Thesis statement:
- Paragraph 1 topic:
- Paragraph 2 topic:
- Paragraph 3 topic:
- Here are some notes from yesterday's lesson, on how to make a good question and a thesis:
- How do write a good question:
- A good question doesn't have a clear correct answer. (This is why we've been practicing question-asking for your presentations)
- Can take a variety of different forms:
- Is it right that...
- Why is...
- How does the novel...
- How to create a good thesis:
- Should be debatable
- Should be provable
- Should be relevant
- Should be clear
- Examples:
- Question: Were Elsa and Anna's parents good people?
- Thesis: Elsa and Anna's parents were neglectful role models, who taught terrible lessons to their children.
- Question: Why does Shrek use so many cultural references?
- Thesis: Shrek uses references to fairy tales, popular culture, and movie tropes to appeal to older audiences.
- Question: Is Scar right to try to take over the throne?
- Thesis: Scar is justified in taking over.
- Read the next two chapters for tomorrow.
