Jan 14, 2021

Hello! Sorry I won't be there today, or Monday either. Here's what we're up to today:

English 8

  • A reminder: if you're missing any homework, please send it in as soon as you can to mmclean@vsb.bc.ca
  • Take a look at the details for Assignment 4. This will be completed in class on Monday.
  • Some background:
    • Who are the Metis People?
    • Who are the Cree People?
    • Who is Gregory Scofield?
  • "I'll Teach You Cree"
    • Read aloud once
    • Spend time exploring it on your own, adding notes. Consider using these websites to learn more about the language: www.forvo.com (for pronunciation), and www.creedictionary.com
    • Read aloud again
    • Reaction: what do you think of it?
    • With a partner, write down in one sentence: What message do you think this poem is offering about life?
  • Activity: Create your own poem in a similar style. If you're able to, include words from another language you know. Once you're done, share with your peers.
  • On Monday, you'll have the entire class to complete and submit your response to Assignment 4.

English 9

  • Some background:
    • Who are the Metis People?
    • Who are the Cree People?
    • Who is Jessie Loyer?
    • What is pemmican?
  • "pimihkan"
    • Read aloud once
    • Spend time exploring it. Consider using these websites to learn more about the language: www.forvo.com (for pronunciation), and www.creedictionary.com
    • Read aloud again
    • Reaction: what do you think of it?
    • With a partner, write down in one sentence: What message do you think this poem is offering about life?
  • Activity: Consider "Section 4," where the author commercializes part of the process of pemmican. Take ten minutes, and create your own similar response. What is something that shouldn't be commercialized, but could? Describe it, and if you're comfortable, share with the class.
  • On Monday, you'll have the entire class to complete and submit your response to Assignment 4.
