Hello! Here's what we're up to today:
English 12
- Checking in
- Update on marking
- Recapping last class
- Literary terms
- Juxtaposition
- Black History Month discussion
- Introducing "APES***"
- This is part of a larger effort I'm making to include modern, diverse texts that address themes of anti-racism
- The nervousness I have is that modern rap is often not included in English courses, and while I think this video is a valuable contribution to modern conversations, I worry about some of the language that is used. I'd welcome feedback and thoughts about how to incorporate texts like this in the future!
- Topics to consider
- The Carters, and their relationship and ancestry
- The Louvre, Art, and Colonialism
- Representation of Black people
- Representation of gender
- Sexuality and dance
- Lyrics vs video
- "APES***" by The Carters
- Reaction
- Take some time to write down what you notice
- For tomorrow, some homework: Take a look through this article in The Atlantic on the video, and give the video another watch. Come to class with one observation or question to make to the class (we'll go around in a circle and discuss). Some areas to focus on:
- One of the pieces of art
- Dance and fashion
- Gender dynamics
- Messages of race and colonialism
- Messages of wealth and success
- Tomorrow, we'll have a chat about this, and likely dive into our fifth and final text for this unit.

- For tomorrow, prepare for an activity we'll do. In a large circle, each student will offer one observation and/or question about the movie. Once we've gone through everyone, we'll open up the discussion so anyone can respond to any comment. Possible areas of focus:
