Nov 8, 2022

Hello! Sorry I'm not there today - feeling a little under the weather. Here's what we're up to today:

English 9

  • Silent reading for fifteen minutes
  • Reading comprehension questions for Chapters 14 and 15 (write down your response in half-paragraphs, to share with the teacher on Wednesday)
    • Hailey unfollows Starr's Tumblr because she found it upsetting. In your opinion, how important is it to follow sources online which you disagree with? Why?
    • What is your opinion of the character Nana? Why?
    • At the end of Chapter 14, the family decides to move out of the neighbourhood. Do you think this is the right decision? Why?
  • Starting a plan for Assignment 8 (The essay). By this point, we've read enough of the book that you should now have a sense of what direction you want your essay to go. Go to the assignment page, and read through the instructions for assignment 8. By tomorrow's lesson, have the following information ready:
    • What question do you want to ask yourself about the novel?
    • What sources might you explore to establish your argument?
  • With remaining time, feel free to continue reading, or catch up on missing work
  • Tomorrow, we'll resume presentations (including those scheduled for today AND tomorrow). Read the next two chapters.

English 8

  • Silent reading for fifteen minutes
  • Reading comprehension questions for Chapters 13 and 14 (write down your response in half-paragraphs, to share with the teacher on Wednesday)
    • In Chapter 13, Cole has a conversation with Brady and Eva, separately. Describe how each character views Cole at this moment in the book.
    • In the middle of page 149, a party is described, where Kendrick Lamar is playing. If a similar party were held in Vancouver this weekend, what music would be playing? Why?
    • At the bottom of page 149, it turns out many people didn't care about Brady and Ashley being together. In your opinion, how does your own community compare to the Wounded Sky community, when it comes to supporting gay people?
  • Freewrite for ten minutes. Respond to the prompt below by writing as much as possible, and then sharing your response with those around you. If you're comfortable, feel free to read to the class.
    • Your prompt is the word: "Parties"
  • Starting a plan for Assignment 9 (The essay). By this point, we've read enough of the book that you should now have a sense of what direction you want your essay to go. Go to the assignment page, and read through the instructions for assignment 9. By tomorrow's lesson, have the following information ready:
    • What question do you want to ask yourself about the novel?
  • With remaining time, feel free to continue reading, or catch up on missing work
  • Tomorrow, we'll resume presentations (for both today's AND tomorrow). Read the next two chapters.
