Hello everyone! Here is the link to this week's lesson. For simplicity's sake, I've turned the lesson into a Google Doc, which will be available on Teams as well.

Week 1 - April 13th

Hello everyone!

On the Teams App, you'll see a video posted relaying the following information. You can find it in the "General" Channel, as a post, and also uploaded at the top of the page, under "Files". For those of you unable to access it, or prefer writing, below is a summary.

English 9

  • Checking in - I hope you're all keeping your head above water in these times!
  • I've created an FAQ page to explain some of the changes that have happened and will happen. The link can also be found on the Assignment page. A quick summary:
    • We'll no longer be working on Much Ado About Nothing / In the Heat of the Night
    • We'll be focusing on Core Competencies and parts of the curriculum that we may have missed
    • We'll be doing weekly lessons you can complete at your own pace, rather than follow Day 1 / Day 2
    • Your first assignment is to choose and start reading a novel.
  • What's the plan this week?
    • Your job is to choose a novel to read over the next month, and submit a brief assignment on the Teams Page by Monday, April 20th. Please consult the assignment page, and look for A2, for more details.
    • Some time this week, check in with me on Teams (either by Chat, or under the "Assignment Discussion" channel) to update me on what book you're choosing, and/or to let me know of any questions or concerns about this assignment. This counts as your attendance! Reminder that Monday is a holiday, so I'll be checking in on Tuesday-Friday.
  • That's it! I hope you're able to stay healthy and safe this week, and that you're able to enjoy getting lost in a book!

Hello! Here's what we're up to today:

  • Time for peer review:
    • Check for punctuation, spelling errors, and vocabulary mistakes
    • See how they might strengthen their argument, give more specific and relevant examples, and most importantly, extend their analyses (did they answer: Why does this matter?)
    • When you can, try to ask questions rather than offering criticisms.
    • At the end, offer a compliment sandwich
  • Next class, hand in your final project!

Feb 24, 2020

Hello! Here's what we're up to today:

  • Checking in
  • Note: Wednesday is a collab day, and it's pink day!
    • This means we'll have double presentations for 2-1/2 on Friday
  • Student presentation(s)
  • Teacher notes
  • Handing back things!
    • Shift register
      • You can still hand it in, and redo it if I gave half-marks
    • Serial projects
      • This is a counter-mark, meaning I'm expecting some of you to come and make a case for a stronger grade (during tutorial time)
      • Note that because I wasn't involved in this process, there might be context I'm missing. Feel free to update me.
      • I'm still missing several self-reflections
      • If I wrote "Where is it?" on the reflection, I need you to send me the original, and then hand back your self-reflection
    • Quizzes
      • You have the right to "challenge" any points you feel you deserve, but bring evidence (in tutorial)
      • If you failed, you're expected to amend the quiz and hand it back to receive a passing grade. There are many ways to do this, so come see me before you do that.
      • If you received a low grade, and are hoping to redo it, I'm open to it, but you'll need to bring strong reasoning.
      • In general, we'll be doing several more quizzes, so make sure you're ready for each one.
  • Coming back to P2, and looking at the schedule (Report cards are coming up)
  • (Assignment 1)
  • Class discussion rubric (I'll be handing a physical copy of this closer to the date)
  • Lit term
    • Imagery
    • Tone
  • Freewrite
  • Next class, listen to the next section
