Hello! Sorry I can't be there today!
English 8
- Silent reading for 15 minutes
- Presentations will once again have to be delayed - my apologies! Taylor will go on Tuesday, Italia on Wednesday, and then Madison on Thursday.
- The essay is now due on Wednesday, so that we can dive into Works Cited and in-text citations tomorrow
- Literary terms:
- Protagonist
- The character who drives the plot of the story forward with their decisions. Often the "good guy," but not always. Can you think of any movies where the main characters are the "bad guys"?
- Antagonist
- The character (or force) resisting the protagonist. Often the "bad guy," but not always.
- Freewrite for ten minutes (try to write the entire time) based on this prompt, to explore the idea of antagonist/protagonist: "I couldn't believe my eyes when they took off their mask!"
- When you're done your freewrite, share what you wrote with those around you
- For tomorrow, answer each question by writing 3-4 sentences, based on the first chapter of Dry:
- What word would you use to describe the tone of chapter 1? Why?
- Choose a character from the story so far who reminds you of someone in your life. Describe how they're similar.
- If a similar situation were to happen in Vancouver, do you think you would help your neighbours? Would they help you? Why?
New Media 10
- Presentations on Hamilton, as well as on the counternarratives project, will need to be pushed back again by a day. My apologies!
- Similarly, we won't be starting The Marrow Thieves on Friday, but likely on Monday.
- Tomorrow, I'll be offering marks (3 points) and feedback for a complete plan for your Hamilton essay. Here's an example of what it should look like, using Shrek instead of Hamilton:
- Question: Is Shrek a good person?
- Thesis: Shrek is a terrible person.
- P1 Topic: Shrek is classist
- Quote 1: "Get out of my swamp!"
- Quote 2: "And the fairy tale creatures?"
- P2 Topic: Shrek makes sexist jokes
- Quote 3: "Looks like he's compensating for something..."
- Quote 4: "I mean...look at her!"
- P3 Topic: Shrek is terrible at fashion
- Quote 5: "Look at the way he's dressed!"
- Quote 6: "I'm an ogre!"
- Also for tomorrow, come knowing the hook you'll start your essay with. One of my high school teachers always started every essay with "It's not easy being green," so that would be a good example.
